When Otto started his internship at ByggVesta’s headquarters, the goal was simple but important: How can we better understand our residents, before something breaks? As a resident of Colonia, ByggVesta’s student housing communities in Linköping, and its area coordinator, Otto saw the internship as a chance to bridge the gap between theory and practice, working on something that felt personal and relevant.
AI + Free Text = Better Insight
When residents submit maintenance requests, they often describe the issue in their own words. That means a wealth of valuable information, but it’s hard to get a clear overview of what’s happening over time.
Otto developed an AI tool that can read and understand these texts. The system extracts key terms, identifies common problems, and groups them accordingly. More complex issues are analyzed using ChatGPT, which also generates short summaries for each category.
The data is collected in an Excel file and then visualized in Power BI, where patterns across time and place become easy to spot. This gives ByggVesta a whole new way to work proactively.
A Learning Journey for Everyone Involved
– It was both fun and challenging to work on something that wasn’t fully defined from the start. I had to use both my technical skills and my ability to create structure. That really helped me grow,” says Otto.
The project is a great example of how fresh ideas from students can lead to real innovation. For us at ByggVesta, it’s also a reminder of the importance of listening, not just to what our residents say, but also to what they write.
