When the first warm days of spring arrive and the trees burst into a soft, fresh green, it feels like the whole world is waking up. And what better way to celebrate than by reviving the old Swedish tradition of “maja”?
Historically, “maja” meant decorating with leaves and flowers to welcome the season, especially around Walpurgis Night. Maj means May! Over time, it also came to mean heading out for a May 1st picnic – a mini early summer celebration in the greenery! And we think this is a tradition worth bringing back. But why stop at just one day? In 2025, we’re turning all of May into maja month – with friends, family, and plenty of fresh air!
How We Maja Today
Grab a few friends, pack something tasty, toss in a blanket and some simple decorations like flowers or birch branches – and head out into the springtime green. No need to overthink it. A few sandwiches or pastries, juice in a thermos, and a speaker with some springy tunes will go a long way.
Pick some flowers, play a game of kubb, or just lounge on your blanket and soak up the sunshine. The most important thing is to enjoy spring, good company, and the moment.
And no – you don’t have to escape to the countryside. Our cities are full of green spaces where you can maja your way.
