Things I Never Thought I’d Have to Google

A Survival Guide to Grown-Up Stuff You Didn’t Ask For

There comes a moment in every young adult’s life when you’re standing in your bathroom thinking:
“What… am I even looking at? And why does it smell like it’s been breathing without brushing its teeth for a week?”

Welcome to adult life. The place where you’re suddenly expected to know everything, from the mysteries of the drain and the fuse box to how to get red wine out of fabric, even though no one ever explained any of it to you.

So, we do what everyone does nowadays: we ask the internet. AI, search engines, TikTok hacks – you name it. And honestly? Without them, we’d probably still be standing there with a stinky floor drain and panic in our eyes.

Here’s a list of very real things I (or someone I know) have had to look up recently:

  • What to do when the entire kitchen loses power.
  • Why the washing machine sometimes smells like… a gym bag.
  • How often you’re supposed to clean the floor drain.
  • Whether you really have to empty the lint filter. (Spoiler: yes.)
  • If sneakers can go in the washing machine. (Sometimes. The dryer? Absolutely not.)

It’s easy to feel like a total rookie – like you’re the only one who doesn’t know how things work. But here’s the thing: everyone starts somewhere.
You don’t just magically know how to adult. You learn it, one Google search and mini domestic crisis at a time.

And honestly? That feeling when you figure something out on your own, even if it’s just getting the recycling right, is actually pretty great.

So keep asking questions. Keep learning. And remember: needing help isn’t a failure. This is exactly how independence begins.
